Hi, it’s Wednesday again! Last week Ramona talked about how to round the corners of your paper or photo. Today I’m going to show you how to round some of the corners of a square or rectangle, like I did when I made this card:
First, I opened up a new 5 inch by 5 inch at 300 dpi document in Photoshop. Next, I put some guides on my canvas. This is an important step to ensure that the lines on the paper blocks are nice and clean. Make sure that the rulers are showing. If they’re not, click View >Rulers or Ctrl (Cmd) – R to make the rulers visible. Also, make sure that ‘snap to - guides’ is selected. Now click on one of the rulers and drag a guide onto your document. Unclick when the guide is where you want it. In this next screenshot you can see that I’ve put the guides on the document and made three of the four rounded shapes. I changed the color of the guides so they’ll be more visible.
To make the 4th shape, make a new layer and draw a rounded rectangle using the guides.
Finally, select the rectangle tool and draw a rectangle covering the corner (or corners) that you don’t want rounded. Normally, I’d draw the second rectangle on the same layer as the first, but I put it on a separate layer so that it would be easier to show what I did. Before using it, I’d have to merge the two layers together.
Done. If you use these directions to make a card or layout, I’d love to see it. Put a link in the comments and I’ll check it out!
Oh, and in case you were wondering, I used Yari’s Autumn Fun – Ghouls’ Night to make the card.

For Photoshop Elements users, you can use turn on the Grid to help you with shapes like this, since there are no guides (well, not in my PSE7, but maybe that is available in newer versions!) Rulers and Grids are both in the same menu as shown, the “View” menu.
Thanks for this!! I have been looking for a new image for my blog and I think I will use this technique
thank u for this tutorial. it’s just what i need. very informative, too!
